Classic Porsche Audio install (same applies to 964)
A true classic brought up to modern day standards
The classic Porsche and 964 have always been a childhood favourite car for me, when i was approached by the owner one Sunday morning, in December I jumped at the chance to get this iconic car in, that much it was in on that Sunday!
We were asked if we could fit the customers own radio, as the original radio had seen the light of day, we installed the fantastic Blaupunkt Bremen SQR46 DAB radio, this being our most popular go to radio for older vehicles, it adds all the modern features without loosing the retro look!
We chopped out the old radio wiring and replaced its old wiring with up to date current wiring so future upgrades could be easily installed if needed (lucky we did this)
Straight away we noticed that only 1 speaker was working and the original aerial had seen better days!
We rebooked this classic Porsche back in the following week between Christmas and new year for a full day installation.
The install
First thing to go were the original speakers
At some point the original front speakers were removed and upgraded with pioneer 2 way drivers, these back in the day were good speakers for this car but by modern day standards and our standards they just were not the best option.
In the rear the same was done the stock 4x6" speakers were removed and replaced with Kenwood speakers, these unfortunately were good decades ago but had now seen the light of day.
in the fronts we used our trusty favourite speakers from Audison and Hertz 4x6" speakers in the rear, we retained the original grills for the rear speakers, in the front used Audison 5.25" prima speakers with hertz Mille grills.
rewiring and aerial upgrade
Last thing we wanted to do was drill or mount any external aerials on this vehicle so we opted for a camper aerial, these originally designed for fiberglass body vehicles work perfectly for DAB and FM and no holes are required.
next on the list was the speaker wires, after replacing the speakers we noticed that the old speaker wires had seriously deteriorated, some broke some were oxidised.
we replaced the speaker wire with Audison connection best speaker wires, best wires are silver tinned copper and will outlast the original wires.
after this we then ran the wires for the DSP installation!
Amplifier with DSP & deadening
Last part to do on this install was to install its Amplifier, on this vehicle we wanted to get the best output for the speakers and opted for our tried and tested Audison AP4.9BIT!
This amplifier has a built in 9 band equaliser DSP, this allows us to fully bit tune the vehicle for the optimum sound and give a full lifetime warranty on the equipment installed, the Bit tune process allows us to not only just tune but fully time align the system and set safety parameters for the speakers.
finally before reassembly we decided to treat key areas like the floor and doors with sound deadening this not only helps reduce road noise, but helps keep the sound in the vehicle
